Virtual Reality Motor-Skills Simulator (VRMSS)

Objective

The Virtual-Reality Motor-Skills Simulator (VRMSS) created is specifically designed to teach baseline fine-motor skills used in surgery, in a non-threatening abstract environment. Bead-like objects of various sizes are manipulated in 3D virtual space. Complexity is increased or decreased by changing the following factors: requirement for non-dominant or bimanual hand use with and without wrist rotation; environmental changes (depth of field, decreased exposure, smaller objects, and obstacles). Haptics is utilized for touch and force-feedback to provide more human-computer interaction and realism then previously possible for personal-computer applications.

The performance measures being scored include motor skills (speed, accuracy, efficiency of motion) and cognitive skills (appropriate procedure selection). Dominant, non-dominant hands working in tandem will be trained and evaluated. The learning outcome will be progressive learning improvement and successful task acquisition based on expert and peer standards.

VRMSS Download, Installation & Usage

Download, Installation and Use is granted only if you agree to the "Terms of Use" below.

Minimum System Requirements (Windows 2000 or XP)

  • One Phantom device (Omni, Desktop or related) by SensAble.
  • 512 MB RAM

Recommended System Specifications (Windows 2000 or XP)

  • Two Phantom devices (Omni, Desktop or related) by SensAble.
  • One foot pedal by X-keys.
  • Dual-core computer system.
  • 1024 MB RAM

System Setup

  1. Download and install the VRMSS software package.
  2. Download and install the DivX codec (if not done so).
  3. Install the OpenHaptics toolkit for your Phantom devices (if not done so). If you have two Phantom devices name them "PHANToM 1" and "PHANToM 2" (Phantom Configuration).
  4. If you use the foot pedal, setup the following layout/mapping:
    • Left Pedal > Button 1
    • Center Pedal > Button 2
    • Right Pedal > Button 3

Manual

  1. Register your Username/Password at the Surgical Simulation Center.
  2. Start the VRMSS system (from Windows Start Menu):
    • Run "VRMSS (1 Omni)" - If only one Phantom device is connected.
    • Run "VRMSS" - If you have two Phantom devices connected.
  3. Login to the Surgical Simulation Center using the Username/Password you choose at registration. NOTE: You can press the ESC-key to skip the login.
  4. Select your dominant hand (choose Right if you only have one Phantom device). Then select the scenario to run.
  5. Follow the instructions and execute the tasks.
  6. Press ESC to close the program.
